Eye Conditions, Eye Treatments
The eyelids are an important part of the ocular system. They protect and lubricate the eyes. The eyelids have a skin (dermal) and protective substance producing (meibomian gland) component. As with any part of the body the eyelids can dysfunction or become infected resulting in “Lid Margin Disease”.
Lid Margin Disease
Lid margin disease can cause irritation, itching, and redness of the eye. Lid margin disease is frequently with health
conditions associated with oily skin (acne or rosacea), dandruff, or ocular dryness (dry eye syndrome).
Controlling lid margin disease can sometimes be achieved with daily hygienic measures such as lid scrubs.
The most convenient way to perform lid scrubs is with individually prepackaged eyelid wipes. Eyelid wipes are commercially available and manufactured for the exact purpose to help patients keep eyelids healthy.
How to Keep Eyelids Healthy
Eyelid wipes are somewhat expensive. A more affordable technique to perform lid scrubs is to use diluted no tears baby shampoo with a clean washcloth or Q-tips. Suggestions for lid scrubs with diluted baby shampoo are as follows:
- Several times a day apply a warm (not scalding) washcloth on your closed eyelids for 30 seconds. Softly loosen scales and debris.
- Using your fingers place a wet washcloth or Q-tip gently scrub the base of the lashes for about 20- 30 seconds and brush off the lid margin debris.
